I’m not happy anymore.

A few months ago, I was feeling ‘off’. I get a lot of joy out of life, but I started to realize that I wasn’t as happy as I thought I should be. I have no reason to be unhappy — I am healthy with family, friends, and money. But I felt bummed out and like I was missing something. I think our society is facing an unhappiness crisis, where a lot of things we are exposed to daily have a direct impact on our ability to experience joy. Here are some steps that helped me get out of my funk.

I realized these prevent us from being as happy as we should be.

Hustle culture — this has been detrimental for me. I felt like if I wasn’t working all the time on 27 things, I was a failure. Sure, be motivated and ambitious but not to a toxic level.

Isolation — we all faced this with Covid, but we are social creatures who should be around other people. We shouldn’t be by ourselves, which can be unfulfilling.

Being in an unhealthy relationship – toxic people are happiness vampires. Identify them and get them out of your life. People around you should have your best interests in mind, which will make you happier. 

Stressed & anxiety — I am overly anxious, which I have been taking CBD oil for stress & sleep. You need quality sleep, and if you don’t, you won’t feel or look as good and you’ll be more stressed out. I realized that I had been off of the CBD oil, so I am now back on track.

Holding in your emotions and not dealing with your issues — I’ve done this the majority of my life. Now that I have dealt with my past, it’s really had a dramatic impact on my well being. Deal with your sh!t. Until you do, you won’t be happy.

Not being where you think you should be personally/professionally — how to deal with this? It’s the process that you need to embrace, not simply the end result.

Not helping other people — I watched the documentary “Happy” where they found we all have a threshold of happiness. The only thing that will raise your happiness threshold is helping other people; it’s more effective than antidepressant drugs. 

Blaming others for your problems — our society is always blaming, but you need to take ownership and realize it’s the challenges that make life beautiful. Happiness is not a destination. I love the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” which details all of this.

Waiting for some ‘thing’ to make you happy — there is no prerequisite to happiness. Be happy NOW. Work towards goals, but you can have joy now.
