Matching and Combining Patterns in Men's Outfits

August 30, 2012
Combining multiple patterns in a men’s outfit can be difficult. Aaron Marino of alpha m. discusses how to combine multiple patterns in one ensemble.

The general style rule is to never have more than 3 patterns in one outfit. For example if pattern on jacket / tie / shirt, then the pants should be solid. If pattern on tie / jacket / pocket square, shirt should be solid. Therefore, wear a maximum 3 patterns, although most men are most comfortable with 2 patterns.  Also balance is important: size, shape, and dimension. The patterns can’t be too similar or the patterns clash.
