Professional male image consultant and stylist, Aaron Marino, helps answer the age old question: tuck or untuck a shirt? What shirts can you untuck? When is untucking appropriate?
Alpha’s pet peeve is seeing a dress shirt that is way too long and untucked. There are three types of button-shirts: casual, dress shirts, and in-between shirts.
- Casual- you would never wear with a tie. They are not intended to be tucked-in. They are shorter and don’t hang low. The casual shirt is about 5 inches shorter than a dress shirt.
- Dress – rigid collar with collar stays and is meant to be worn with a tie and in a business / business casual environment. You can wear with jeans and loafers but don’t wear untuck- never ever!
- In-between- it’s not really dressy or casual. It has a collar but is less rigid / structured. If in a pinch, you could wear a tie but you could also wear untucked. The question is where does the shirt end in the front and back. The front should show a bit of crotch, and the tail of the shirt shouldn’t cover your entire butt and pockets.
