The issue comes with *matching* grays. What you want to do is have the grays as far apart as possible (contrasting). When he puts an outfit together, he’s not going to match similar grays. He will match with the medium and dark gray if matching with the light gray.
You will see that the contrast looks a lot better. Balance and contrast is more aesthetically pleasing. The closer in color you get, the funkier it looks unless you can get an identical match. To be on the safe side, go with contrasting.
